Food & Drink – New Zealand

A lot of our month in New Zealand was spent cooking meals at our Airbnb and using the free fresh eggs that our hosts provided. We did get out several times to try some of the local dishes. Here are few of our favorites.

Kiwi Burgers – a Kiwi burger by definition has meat, cheese, griddle egg, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, onions, mustard, and tomato sauce on a toasted bun. It was created by McDonald’s several year ago. Different variations of it can be found in several restaurants.

Fergburger – this is a famous hamburger joint in Queenstown and for sure one of the best burgers we have had. They had fresh made to order patties with buns made from Fergbaker nextdoor. Long lines shouldn’t discourage you; they moved fast. It’s well worth the time if you’re ever in Queenstown!

Meat Pies – delicious pies filled with all kinds of meats. They are kind of like a chicken pot pie. We had lots of different kinds but really liked the beef and gravy as well as the steak and cheese ones.

Fish and Chips – is a New Zealand staple. A lot of them used Hoki a local white fish. They were so good everytime we had them.

Thai food – being this close to Southeast Asia has its advantages. There are great Thai restaurants all over both islands. This was what we had for Tom’s birthday.

Shapes crackers – reminded us of chicken in a biscuit crackers back home. They got us through several long hikes.

Cheddar cheese and bacon scones – These were so good and could be found in bakeries all over the country. They had all kinds of scones but these ones were definitely our favorites.

Cookie Bear sprinkle cookies – another great snack that we probably had to many of! A thin shortbread cookie packed with sprinkles.

Chinese food – the Chinese food was really good around New Zealand. We thought it was funny that almost every Chinese place also served fish and chips.

Monteith’s Cider – brewed in New Zealand it was one of our favorite drinks. Monteith’s also brews some really good beers.
