Food & Drink – Australia

Australia, like New Zealand, is a country with a lot of British influence when it comes to its cuisine. There is also a heavy Asian influence due to its proximity to Asia. Below are some of our favorite foods, meals and drinks from our two months in Australia.

Kangaroo – When in Australia, right? Honestly, it tasted like steak. It was delicious and readily available in the supermarkets and butcher shops unlike venison in the US.

Tim Tams – Chocolate cookie goodness. Here in Australia they have Tim Tam flavored shakes and malts too, kind of like Oreo back at home.

Freddo Biscuits – These are another sweet delight and we preferred them to the Tim Tam.

Sausage rolls – These were served at Chelsea’s work conference. They were so good she bought some to share with the whole family later on.

Aussie Big Dog – Chelsea got this at Manly Beach by Sydney. It was so good with the fried egg, bacon, onions and BBQ sauce.

Jane’s addiction – this pizza from Little C’s was one of our favorites. It was constructed of garlic prawns, prosciutto, mozzarella, cream sauce, parsley and a lemon wedge.

Bubble tea – our guilty pleasure. We had bubble tea every chance we got. The kids loved the flavored teas like apple or mango with flavored popping pearls. We really liked the Thai tea milk with boba.

Chicken/Beef Schnitty – breaded chicken/beef that is deep fried. A huge favorite amongst Australians. We had this dish many times. It was best smothered in gravy.

Chicken Schnitty Pringles – they love chicken Schnitty so much they even made a special addition Pringles flavor along with a few other local favorites.

Shapes vegemite crackers – although we never tried actual Vegemite the cracker version was pretty good.

Chinese dumplings – this has quickly become one of our kids favorite things to eat. It was even our Christmas eve meal. We are looking forward to eating lots more of them in Asia.

Fish tacos – we had these a couple of times at Clancy’s Fish Pub. They were so fresh and delicious.

Beef El Maco – we like to see what the local McDonald’s have on their menu that is different from home. In Australia it was the El Maco hamburger. It tasted like a taco was placed on top of a hamburger which turns out is a pretty good idea.

Damper Roll – this is a traditional Australian soda bread. We had it as a breakfast sandwich in Adelaide.

Solo Lemon drink – our favorite carbonated beverage. It helped us survive the 100 degree days.

Fried chilli lime squid – squid is very popular in Australia. We tried it as an appetizer. It was chewy but very good.

Sticky date pudding – this was one of the best desserts we had in Australia! It was like a super moist brownie covered in caramel sauce.

Wineries – we were lucky enough to visit some amazing wine regions like the Barossa valley, Swan valley and Margaret river area. Each region was beautiful and had incredible wineries. Our favorite was the Jacob’s Creek Winery in the Barossa valley.

Margaret River

Breweries – Australia also had a ton of great breweries. Some of our favorites were Pirate Life Brewing in Port Adelaide, Little Creatures Brewing in Fremantle and Bootleg Brewery in Margaret River. Also we had to try beer from Cooper’s brewery for obvious reasons!
